Final cue count is 7396

Here's a press release in addition to the interview:

The design we are seeking is to parallel the story of Fantasia, capturing the similarities of a young pyrotechnic choreographer whose dream is to achieve the ultimate prize of mastering his skills of music, design and pyro-orchestration…the ultimate achievement is what we thought to be as “Thunderstruck” which of course is a play on words with our intro for the Grand Finale. We chose rock symphony versions of most of the classics to capture the true essence of the Pyro Fantasia story with the use of modern musical interpretations. We tailored the story for the 28th Edition of the Montreal competition in the eyes of any young choreographer with a dream in winning a Jupiter award...to be part of the history of the very best displays performed in Montreal. There are emotions of exhilaration, fear, hope and ultimately satisfaction with having produced a display that will compete with the great competitors of not only during this 28th Edition of this prestigious event, but also competitions of past.

The musical selections chosen were based on the story of Fantasia to draw the similarities of the emotional roller coaster depicted within both story lines. To capture the power of our story, we are using Rock Symphony versions mostly from the TSO and German rock violinist David Garrett to provide a stronger interpretation. Many of the classics including Toccata, Nutrocker (TSO version of The Nutcracker Suite) and The 5th (David Garrett’s version of Beethoven’s 5th) were chosen because of their importance in the original versions of Disney’s Fantasia including the classic, Night on Bare (Bald) Mountain and the Firebird Suite (San Francisco Symphony). Other musical selections we felt targeted the spirit of our theme are Summer by David Garrett, Carnival of the Animals and the soundtrack of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The lead up to the finale we felt was capturing the feeling of - nothing else matters in place of Ave Maria. This is where we introduce the rock symphony version of Metallica’s – Nothing Else Matters by David Garrett and finally the Grand Finale of Garrett’s version of the AC/DC rock classic (with a twist) – Thunderstruck! With nearly 7,500 cues and 6,000 of those are 40mm to 50mm single shot comets, mines and bombettes from Vicente Caballer of Spain and Vulcan from China. Other notable shells included in the program are Strobing Nishiki Kamurus, Strobing Crossettes, Farfallas with assorted pistils, Sweeping “Ghost” shells, 6 and 10 pointed Chrysanthemums…and our exclusive Mega Pyro Arch with a capacity of firing over 800 single shot comets. We were able to make the necessary creative and technical edits because of the use of Visual Show Director 4D. VSD allowed us to make the necessary changes in scenes that may have been over or under choreographed. Just another tool in the 21st Century arsenal of pyrotechnic designers.

Quite simply, every young choreographers dream is to design a unique display that captures the hearts and minds of the Montreal audience as well as the judges of the competition. With so many years of high quality displays featured in Montreal, it was important for us to show a depiction of this story for almost any new competitor to the Montreal International Fireworks Competition. This is our third appearance and we still have those same feelings we did from our very first Montreal experience in 1995.

Paul, thank you for this interview report. Its content fuels my anticipation much more than the number of cues (though the 800 cues for a single setup structure is impressive; definitely not the same kind of arch than Pyrotecnico's one in 2008).

I'm looking forward for this show!
