A first in Montréal, this exhibition will be accompanied by a live performance by the 40 musicians of the Youth Symphonic Orchestra of Cologne. Highlighting this event and to encourage his country in the quest for the platinum Jupiter, Mr. Marco Wiedemann, representing Germany's Chamber of Commerce, will make a speech during the opening ceremony at 9:30 p.m., from the floating stage in La Ronde's Lac des Dauphins. For the first time this year, the creator of "Eau de Cologne," Mr. George Alef, will utilise classical instead of modern music, like preceding competitors. This grand pyromusical journey will link the two metropolises of Cologne and Montréal and invite spectators to discover, in music and images, the majestic and exceptional characters of two great multicultural cities that are rich in culture and customs. Among other pyromusical surprises of this complex show, spectators will be dazzled by several magnificent pieces, including one representing the Cathedral of Cologne. To accomplish this feat, the German team will use cranes and an aluminum transom from which an incredible waterfall will be deployed. And to take emotions even further, WECO will utilise a vast selection of colours and a variety of quality pyrotechnics such as bombs, candles, fountains, coils, as well as flying and nautical pieces. For the musical soundtrack, WECO will use a symphonic poem written by Gunter Hassy, composer, producer and conductor of the Junge Sinfonie Koln (Youth Symphonic Orchestra of Cologne). M. Hassy will conduct his orchestra for the WECO show on July 24. For this event, M. Hassy has composed 4 pieces to represent 4 of the show's main tableaux. The first piece, "Fireworks Fanfare," has been composed specifically to integrate with the fireworks. The second piece, "Galeane Overture," features melodies inspired by traditional Irish music. The third piece, "Schlaraffe Overture," is a piece composed in 1998 for the 50th anniversary of the German company. The final piece, "Canadian Overture," was written for the July 24 Montréal show. The head office of the German company WECO is located in Eitorf near Cologne and was founded in 1948 by Hermann Weber. Over the years, the company has participated in numerous international competitions, including several Montreal International Fireworks Competitions. WECO was awarded a gold Jupiter in 2000, a silver Jupiter in 1997 and a bronze Jupiter in 1996. This year, the firm is in contention for the one and only platinum Jupiter. The largest manufacturer in Germany, WECO manufactures pyrotechnical pieces in Eitorf, Kiel and Freiberg, and exports its products throughout Europe and North America. The Coupe du monde SAQ fireworks will be presented at 10 p.m., rain or shine. On fireworks nights, the Jacques-Cartier Bridge is closed to all vehicles from 8 p.m. until the end of the show.
