Brad Dezotell, designer of the upcoming Fireworks Spectaculars show, spoke to me yesterday and wants to encourage forum members to pose questions about his display. He said he intends to give a progress report each day on how the setup is coming along.

He pledged to spend some time each evening to answer anything you want to know about the display so please feel free to post them here. Brad said he may get me to post the answers on his behalf.

Thank you for this notification. It is quite an honor and privilege to be able to communicate with the designer of the display through our questions and to get a daily progress report!

For myself, can we expect a display similar to what was witnessed in 2007? I know the budget is lower, but I still somehow have the urge to pose the question perhaps because the display in 2007 was memorable.

Will there be any structures (i.e. towers) in the display, or unique effects?

Wow, let me just say that Brad is a real trooper for allowing fans to pose direct questions. Actually, this would be an interesting feature to have for each display hehe

Anyways, I was wondering if any 12 inch shells will be used for this display, and if not, how many smaller caliber shells will be employed. As always, I'm fascinated to know have many cues will be used for this display. If possible, in order to satisfy my ummm cough ..pyrotechnic porn fantasy ..cough, it would be awesome to have some pictures to see his team setup large caliber shells in mortars lol.

Here's Brad's responses to the questions so far, and a progress update.


Just got back from a good team dinner in downtown Montreal. We had a fairly good day 1 (premount day 1) and after a few extra hours, we are where we need to be prep wise heading into Day 2.

Day 1 used to be offsite in a prep tent and now with only saturday shows its onsite and even involves loading the big shells, plus all the regular preprep. This includes premounted plates, candles, cakes, special effect prep, etc. Nothing really exciting, just a lot of weather proofing, labelling and mounting.

As for the questions about the show;

Are there any structures? Nothing specific such as towers, however our competition displays have a tendancy to have effects performed from and in every available space. In other words, during the show we will shoot from every ramp and hit every possible spot in the sky and on the water!

Are there any 12" Shells? Yes there are several 12" shells and a little tip is you won't wait very long into the show to see the first one.

How many cues in the show? Cue counts can be misleading, however we are near 3200.

Can we see pictures of the crew dropping big shells? All of them are already loaded, so we will all have to wait to see them together on Saturday night.

Will there be a ramp #5 ?

What is the firing system used (though it will be asked by Paul this afternoon) ?

What are the brands of products used (again, Paul will certainly ask this) ?

Back at the hotel, waiting to join some good friends for a nice dinner and have a few moments.

Had a great today and tommorow the real push starts when we begin loading Ramp 1 and 2 first thing in the morning. Ramp 5 is ready to go out on the water Saturday and most of the Plates (pre installed effects), candles are mounted, cakes prepped and pyro all mounted.

For today's questions;

Can we expect a show similar to 2007? The show is completely different design, but is similar in scope and size.

Will there be a ramp 5? Yes

Firing system? Pyrodigital

Brands of product? !2 different brands represented in the show.

Real work starts tommorow, so I'll have more for you then.

Hey Brad,

I got several questions if you may kindly take the time to respond to.

What products are you using from Panzera, are they noise creating products? Like thunder mine candles? Or like salutes. I'd really love to see your team set off some studatas and studata lambis (<-- my favorite shells ).

Will your finale this year be similar to the one in 2007? Cause it seemed that it was mainly ground effects, it didn't have that many shells in the sky. Hope this year brings tons of shells in the air in the last minute (similar to an Italian finale ).

(there's two parts to this question) The salutes you are using the in the finale, are they flash salutes or titanium salutes? Hope to finaly see a firm that uses flash salutes like Italy always uses. :P and, the salutes your using in the finale, will they be cakes? In 2007, I recall very well that you had fired numerous cakes of salutes, mixed in with shells and upfront effects. Are you planning this year to use single shot salutes? The ones that are (hopefully) in Ramp 1 (between 4-6"[img]http://montreal-fireworks.com/forum/img/smilies/wink.gif[ /img]?

It would be a true finale with Pagano helping you guys out, but I'm sure your team will do great. .

I don't really have any question (Paul did a great interview report), but as you may take an ultimate look on this forum before the display, I just want to support and to wish the best luck for you and your team. Following the strong performance delivered in 2007, I was sure that seeing you again in Montreal was just a question of time. Now, it is yours. Enjoy!

Up and at it bright and early, ready to head down and install the rest of our show. Hopefully things are done in good time for us to make it back to the hotel and rest a little bit before the show. Show day is traditionally a big and long day, so maybe wishful thinking.

Just a few quick ones, the soundtrack is seamless in many sections, however there are some endings to songs in places that needed it (so we felt). Kind of a hybrid concept.

Type of Salutes? Salutes are Titatinum.

Type of Finale? I can only say sit back and enyjoy.

Finally, I really hope you enjoy the display as my team and the Laronde crew have poured many many hours into the show (as they do with all). We have been treated very well here in Montreal and we hop to give a little back with a show for you this evening.

I guess its my turn to ask a question. Can I get a weather report?

Hi Brad,

As STL and others have stated previously, we are most appreciative of your progress reports.

The weather is just what I had written in the link that STL provided you. Some good news is that the system has slowed yet further in the newer model runs this morning. As such, though there is still the slight risk for convective showers (and the odd t-shower) later this evening, severe weather is now much less likely in Southern Quebec because of the timing of the cold front. This also suggests that most of the principal rains/storms should arrive overnight as well. Winds and temperature/humidity still hold true - winds should be ideal for everyone this evening due to likely South-Southwesterly tendency.
