St Steven's Day 2001, Budapest
This spectacular display, by Pyro-Technic of Budapest, Hungary, marked the end of a year long celebration of the first millenium since the founding of Hungary in AD 1000. The display took place along 3km of the river Danube on four double-barges and also a chain-link suspension bridge. The highlight of this 30 minute pyromusical (with a budget of US$700,000) was the huge set-piece in the shape of the Hungarian crown, in the centre of the chain-link bridge and using over 2000 coloured lances. An estimated 1.2 million people lined the banks of the Danube to watch the display. These photographs were taken from the Fisherman's Bastion, some 80m above the Danube and about 800m away from the nearest barge.
